Alberta Stands Alone: Refuses to Sign Joint Statement on Trump Tariffs

In a surprising turn of events, Alberta has refused to sign a joint statement from the first ministers' meeting regarding the Trump administration's proposed tariffs on Canadian goods. Premier Danielle Smith, who attended the meeting virtually, stated that Alberta cannot support the federal government's plan if it includes energy export tariffs.  The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, aimed to present a united front against the U.S. tariff threats. Jewish Institutions on High Alert After Identical Bomb Threats Across Canada

In a coordinated attack, more than 100 synagogues, Jewish organizations, and hospitals across Canada received identical threatening emails. The messages, sent at 5 a.m. ET, contained threats of death and physical harm, aiming to cause “terror.” While law enforcement confirmed no imminent physical violence, the impact remains stark.

The rise in antisemitism in Canada, following last fall’s Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent military response in Gaza, has been concerning. B’nai Brith Canada reported a doubling of antisemitic incidents in 2023, including 77 violent cases. Jewish leaders emphasize the need to confront extremism and radicalization.

Police in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Calgary responded to the threats. Although no immediate danger was found, the disruption caused by these “nuisance emails” underscores the urgency for leaders to address hate and protect vulnerable communities.
