Cyclone Chido Devastates Mayotte: Death Toll Rises

 

Cyclone Chido, one of the most powerful storms to hit the region in nearly a century, has caused widespread destruction in the French territory of Mayotte. The cyclone, which brought winds exceeding 220 kph (136 mph), has resulted in a devastating death toll, with current estimates ranging from several hundred to potentially thousands.

The French Interior Ministry confirmed at least 11 deaths, but officials warn that this number is expected to rise significantly as rescue efforts continue. The cyclone has also left hundreds injured and caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including the main hospital and airport.

Mayotte, already one of France's poorest territories, has been severely impacted, with entire neighborhoods flattened and many residents left without shelter. The French government has mobilized rescue teams and supplies from nearby territories to assist in the recovery efforts.
