Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a transformative figure in the Catholic Church, has passed away at the age of 88. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, he rose from humble beginnings to become a global symbol of compassion, humility, and reform.  

Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis championed the rights of the marginalized, advocating for immigrants, the poor, and LGBTQ+ individuals. His leadership was marked by a commitment to inclusivity, environmental stewardship, and a push for modernization within the Church.  

His passing was announced by the Vatican early Monday morning, with Cardinal Kevin Farrell stating, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father”. His death follows a series of health challenges, including a prolonged battle with respiratory issues.  

As the world mourns his loss, tributes pour in from leaders across the globe, recognizing his unwavering dedication to justice and faith. The College of Cardinals will soon convene to elect his successor, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Catholic Church.
