Diplomatic Tensions Rise as Canada Condemns IDF Actions in West Bank

Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly condemned the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) for firing shots near a diplomatic delegation that included Canadian representatives in the West Bank. Calling the incident "totally unacceptable," Carney emphasized Canada's expectation of a full investigation into the matter.

The federal government confirmed that four members of a Canadian delegation were present during the incident in the city of Jenin. Two of them were Canadian officials, while the other two were local staff. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has since summoned Israel’s ambassador to Canada to express serious concerns and demand accountability.

The IDF stated that the delegation had deviated from its approved route, prompting soldiers to fire warning shots to redirect them away from restricted areas. While no injuries were reported, the event has sparked international criticism, with France and Italy also summoning Israeli diplomats for explanations.

This latest development comes amid growing tensions between Israel and Western nations over its military actions in Gaza and the West Bank. Canada, along with the United Kingdom and France, has recently threatened to impose targeted sanctions on Israel if humanitarian aid to Gaza remains insufficient.

As diplomatic discussions unfold, Canada continues to push for transparency and accountability regarding the incident, reinforcing its stance on international security and human rights.
