Greece’s Asylum Freeze Sparks Global Outcry Amid Crete Migrant Surge

In a move that has ignited fierce backlash from human rights organizations and the United Nations, Greece has passed legislation temporarily halting asylum applications from migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. The three-month suspension, approved by parliament with 177 votes in favor and 74 against, allows for expedited repatriation without prior identification. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis defended the measure as a “difficult but necessary decision” in response to a sharp rise in irregular arrivals, particularly from Libya to the island of Crete. Khamenei Declares Defiance as Trump Eyes Renewed Talks

In his first public address since a ceasefire ended a 12-day war with Israel, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a blistering speech on Thursday, warning the United States against further aggression and declaring Iran’s military response a “slap to America’s face”.

Speaking in a prerecorded video aired on state television, the 86-year-old leader appeared visibly fatigued but resolute. He downplayed the impact of recent U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, calling President Donald Trump’s claims of obliteration “exaggerated”. Khamenei asserted that Iran had emerged victorious and reiterated that any future attacks would be met with severe retaliation.

Meanwhile, President Trump confirmed that diplomatic channels remain open, stating that talks between U.S. and Iranian officials are expected to resume next week. However, Tehran has not publicly acknowledged any such plans.

The speech marked Khamenei’s first appearance since reportedly taking shelter during the conflict. As Iran begins to reopen its airspace and return to normalcy, tensions remain high, with both sides trading warnings even as diplomacy looms on the horizon.
