Fort Bliss to Become Largest Migrant Detention Center in U.S. History

The Trump administration has unveiled plans to construct the largest federal migrant detention facility in U.S. history at Fort Bliss, a military base near El Paso, Texas. The Pentagon confirmed that the facility will initially house 1,000 detainees by mid to late August, with construction continuing to expand capacity to 5,000 beds in the coming months.

This initiative is part of a broader immigration enforcement strategy that includes deploying military resources and expanding detention infrastructure nationwide. The Department of Homeland Security will oversee operations at Fort Bliss, although the facility itself is being built on a military base. The administration has also approved additional detention sites in Indiana, New Jersey, and even Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The $1.26 billion contract for the Fort Bliss facility was awarded to Acquisition Logistics Company, a Virginia-based contractor with limited prior experience in detention operations. Critics have raised concerns about conditions in similar tent-based facilities, citing reports of inadequate food, water, and legal access at other sites like Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz”.

With migrant detention numbers reaching record highs—approximately 57,000 as of late July—the administration has made immigration enforcement a cornerstone of its policy agenda and reelection campaign.
