Houthi Drone Strike Hits Ramon Airport, Disrupts Flights in Southern Israel

A drone launched from Yemen by the Iran-backed Houthi militant group struck the arrivals hall of Ramon International Airport near Eilat on Sunday, injuring at least one person and prompting the closure of southern Israel’s airspace.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, multiple drones were launched toward Israel, with several intercepted before crossing into its territory. However, one managed to hit the passenger terminal, causing shrapnel injuries and triggering a temporary suspension of all takeoffs and landings.

The Houthis claimed responsibility, calling the strike a “qualitative military operation” and warning that “enemy airports are unsafe”. The attack comes just two weeks after an Israeli airstrike in Sanaa killed the Houthi prime minister and several senior officials, escalating tensions between the two sides.

Ramon Airport, Israel’s second international gateway after Ben Gurion, has faced repeated threats from Yemen-based militants but had largely remained operational throughout the conflict. This latest incident underscores the growing reach of Houthi attacks, which have also targeted Red Sea shipping routes and Israeli cities in recent months.
