Ryan Routh Faces Trial Alone in Alleged Trump Assassination Plot

Jury selection begins today in the high-profile federal trial of Ryan Routh, the 59-year-old accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club in September 2024. Prosecutors allege Routh concealed himself near the sixth green with a rifle, intending to shoot Trump during a round of golf, before being spotted by a U.S. Secret Service agent and fleeing without firing a shot.

Routh, who faces multiple charges including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, has chosen to represent himself, dismissing his public defenders in July. He will deliver his own opening and closing statements, question witnesses, and present evidence, with his former attorneys serving only as standby counsel.

Court filings reveal Routh previously sought to introduce unusual proposals — including a “beatdown session” with Trump and trading himself for a prisoner held abroad — and attempted to submit expert testimony on his own “narcissism”. Prosecutors say he also tried to obtain heavy weaponry, including an anti-aircraft missile, in the weeks before the alleged plot.

If convicted, Routh faces the possibility of life in prison. Opening statements are scheduled for September 11, with the trial expected to last up to two weeks.
