Water Crisis Grips Conception Bay South as Town Declares State of Emergency

Conception Bay South has already spent much of August under a state of emergency and evacuation alerts because of wildfires.

Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador’s second-largest community, has declared a state of emergency after a major water main break cut off supply from the St. John’s Regional Water Authority. Mayor Darrin Bent warned that the town’s reserves — serving roughly 27,000 residents — were rapidly depleting, prompting an immediate shutdown of all businesses to conserve water for emergency use.

Residents have been ordered to limit water consumption strictly to essential needs, while neighbouring towns stand ready with water tankers in case of fire. The disruption comes just weeks after the community endured wildfire evacuation alerts, adding to local strain.

Repair crews are working to fix the damaged 50-year-old pipe, but officials say there is no clear timeline for restoration. Schools in the area remain closed, and the town has urged residents to prepare for the possibility of taps running dry.
