Zelenskiy Signals Readiness to Step Down After War Ends
A presidential election due in 2024 was suspended in line with martial law, introduced in Ukraine after Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Zelenskiy, a former comedian, was elected in 2019.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said he is prepared to leave office once the war with Russia concludes, emphasizing that his primary mission is to secure peace rather than extend his political career.
In a recent interview, Zelenskiy explained that he does not intend to seek re-election after the conflict, stating: “My goal is to finish the war, not elections.” He added that if a ceasefire is reached, he would ask Ukraine’s parliament to organize elections, which have been suspended under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Despite the prolonged war, Zelenskiy continues to enjoy significant public trust, with polls showing a majority of Ukrainians supporting his leadership. Since his election in 2019, the former comedian has become a central figure on the global stage, delivering daily addresses, visiting troops on the front lines, and rallying international support for Ukraine.
Zelenskiy’s remarks highlight his view of leadership as a wartime responsibility rather than a long-term political ambition. For many Ukrainians, his pledge underscores both his commitment to ending the war and his willingness to step aside for a new mandate once peace is restored.
