Air Transat Faces Flight Suspensions Amid Pilot Strike Notice

Air Transat has announced it will gradually suspend flights starting Monday following a 72-hour strike notice issued by its pilots’ union. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), representing roughly 700 pilots, delivered the notice after nearly a year of unsuccessful negotiations with the airline’s parent company, Transat A.T. Inc. Background The union filed the strike notice on Sunday, giving pilots the legal right to walk off the job as early as Wednesday. Carney to Hold First Formal Talks with Xi at APEC Summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney waits for a plenary session to begin at the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sunday Oct. 26, 2025.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea later this week.

Carney said the leaders will discuss “a broad range of issues, both in terms of the commercial relationship as well as the evolution of the global system”.  The meeting comes after Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand’s recent visit to Beijing, signaling what officials describe as a “resetting of expectations” in Canada-China relations.

This will mark the first formal meeting between Canadian and Chinese leaders in several years, following a period of strained ties over trade disputes and diplomatic tensions. Carney emphasized that while the relationship is starting from “a very low base,” the talks are intended to lay the groundwork for more constructive engagement.

Observers say the meeting could be a pivotal step toward easing trade frictions, particularly as China maintains tariffs on Canadian agricultural products. Business leaders in Canada have urged closer dialogue to stabilize economic ties.
