Trump Oversees Landmark Thailand-Cambodia Peace Accord at ASEAN Summit

U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands with Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh as East Timor's Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao and Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong look on at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, October 26, 2025.

U.S. President Donald Trump headlined the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia on Sunday, where he presided over the signing of an expanded ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.

The deal, dubbed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, was signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also present. The agreement builds on a truce reached in July after a deadly five-day border conflict that killed dozens and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Trump, who played a key role in brokering the ceasefire, hailed the accord as a “historic step toward lasting peace.” The agreement includes commitments to withdraw heavy weaponry from disputed border areas, release Cambodian prisoners of war, and deploy ASEAN observers to monitor compliance.

Regional leaders emphasized that the accord not only ends immediate hostilities but also lays the groundwork for rebuilding trust between the two neighbors. On the sidelines of the summit, Trump also engaged in trade discussions with Southeast Asian leaders, underscoring Washington’s renewed focus on the Indo-Pacific.
