Two Years On: Gaza Bombarded as Hamas and Israel Weigh Trump Peace Plan

Families of Israeli hostages and supporters protest outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence, marking the two-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas from Gaza, in Jerusalem.

Israeli forces launched heavy strikes across Gaza on Tuesday, marking the second anniversary of the Hamas-led assault that ignited the ongoing war. Tanks, jets, and naval fire targeted multiple districts in both northern Gaza City and southern Khan Younis, residents reported, while militants fired rockets into southern Israel, triggering air raid sirens.

The escalation came as Hamas and Israel engaged in indirect negotiations in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, over U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed peace framework. The plan, which includes provisions for Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and Hamas’ disarmament, is being described by mediators as the most serious attempt yet to end the conflict.

Despite the talks, the violence underscored the fragile state of diplomacy. Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, issued a joint statement rejecting any surrender of arms, vowing that “resistance by all means” would continue.

In Israel, commemorations were held at sites of the October 7, 2023, attacks, including the Nova music festival, where hundreds were killed. Families of hostages still held in Gaza gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square, pressing for their loved ones’ return.

Since the war began, Gaza health authorities report more than 67,000 Palestinians killed, nearly a third of them children. Israel maintains its campaign is aimed at Hamas, accusing the group of embedding within civilian areas.

As the conflict enters its third year, the gap between battlefield realities and diplomatic aspirations remains stark, leaving both sides bracing for what comes next.
