UN Prepares Massive Humanitarian Push for Gaza as Ceasefire Nears

Palestinians run towards parachutes carrying aid packages, in Deir Al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip August 18, 2025.

The United Nations has announced plans for a large-scale humanitarian operation in Gaza, set to begin once the newly agreed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas takes effect. According to UN officials, the first 60 days of the truce will see a dramatic increase in aid deliveries, with hundreds of trucks expected to cross daily carrying food, medicine, and other essential supplies.

The initiative aims to reach more than 2.1 million people in need of food assistance and provide nutritional support for half a million vulnerable individuals. In addition, the UN will distribute cash to 200,000 families, restore Gaza’s devastated health system, and deliver critical medical supplies. Shelter support will also be expanded, with thousands of tents and tarps set to be distributed weekly to help families prepare for winter.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that safe and sustained access for humanitarian workers is vital for the plan’s success. The ceasefire, expected to begin within 24 hours of Israeli government approval, also includes provisions for the release of hostages and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces.

With famine already gripping parts of Gaza and tens of thousands of children facing acute malnutrition, UN officials say the operation is a race against time to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.
