Federal Government Injects $1 Billion to Stabilize Canada Post

The federal government is extending another major financial lifeline to Canada Post, approving a fresh $1‑billion loan facility as the postal service continues to grapple with steep losses and mounting operational pressures. The new funding is designed as a temporary, repayable measure to help the Crown corporation maintain essential services while it pushes ahead with a broad modernization plan. Canada Post has faced years of declining mail volumes, rising parcel competition, and escalating labour and infrastructure costs — challenges that have contributed to billions in cumulative losses. Ottawa has signaled that this latest support comes with an expectation of meaningful reform. Canada Post has already submitted a transformation strategy that includes modernizing delivery networks, updating service standards, and reducing operational inefficiencies. The government has also removed several long‑standing constraints that previously limited the corporation’s ability to adapt. ...

Title: Escalation in the West Bank: Israeli Settlers Attack Palestinian Towns and Clash with Military

In a recent surge of violence, Israeli settlers attacked two Palestinian towns and clashed with their own military forces in the West Bank. The incidents occurred early Wednesday, following attempts by Israeli police to dismantle an illegal settler outpost in the occupied territory.

According to reports, settlers set fire to property and hurled stones in the towns of Huwara and Beit Furik. Palestinian officials confirmed that one house and two cars were set ablaze in Huwara, a town near Nablus that has previously been targeted by radical settlers. In Beit Furik, settlers torched another property, escalating tensions in the region.

The Israeli military condemned the violence, stating that a group of settlers had confronted both its forces and the police. The military emphasized its strong stance against any form of violence directed at its personnel. The Shin Bet domestic intelligence service and police arrested eight individuals for assaulting security forces and damaging property.

The Palestinian president's office condemned the attacks, highlighting that there had been around 30 settler attacks in the Nablus area within the past month. Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh called on the United States to intervene to prevent further escalation.

This incident is part of a broader surge in violence across the West Bank since the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel, which triggered a wider conflict involving multiple fronts. The United Nations reports that over 700,000 Israeli settlers now live among 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in 1967.
