Market Jitters Rise as Tariff Threats Hit Global Stocks

Global markets slipped in early trading after President Donald Trump signaled potential new tariffs on several European nations, unsettling investors and prompting a swift move into traditional safe‑haven assets. Stock futures in the U.S. and Europe traded lower, with major indexes across Frankfurt, Paris, and London also losing ground. The renewed trade tension injected fresh uncertainty into markets already sensitive to geopolitical shifts. Gold prices climbed as investors sought protection from potential economic fallout, while the dollar weakened against the yen and Swiss franc. Oil edged down on concerns that escalating trade disputes could weigh on global growth and energy demand. With U.S. markets closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, lighter trading volumes amplified the market’s reaction. Investors now look ahead for clarity on whether the tariff threats will escalate into a broader confrontation.

Title: Escalation in the West Bank: Israeli Settlers Attack Palestinian Towns and Clash with Military

In a recent surge of violence, Israeli settlers attacked two Palestinian towns and clashed with their own military forces in the West Bank. The incidents occurred early Wednesday, following attempts by Israeli police to dismantle an illegal settler outpost in the occupied territory.

According to reports, settlers set fire to property and hurled stones in the towns of Huwara and Beit Furik. Palestinian officials confirmed that one house and two cars were set ablaze in Huwara, a town near Nablus that has previously been targeted by radical settlers. In Beit Furik, settlers torched another property, escalating tensions in the region.

The Israeli military condemned the violence, stating that a group of settlers had confronted both its forces and the police. The military emphasized its strong stance against any form of violence directed at its personnel. The Shin Bet domestic intelligence service and police arrested eight individuals for assaulting security forces and damaging property.

The Palestinian president's office condemned the attacks, highlighting that there had been around 30 settler attacks in the Nablus area within the past month. Spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh called on the United States to intervene to prevent further escalation.

This incident is part of a broader surge in violence across the West Bank since the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel, which triggered a wider conflict involving multiple fronts. The United Nations reports that over 700,000 Israeli settlers now live among 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in 1967.
