Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit: What You Need to Know About Tomorrow's Payment

If you've ever received a GST/HST credit payment from the CRA, there's a good chance money is landing in your bank account tomorrow — and this time, it could be noticeably bigger than usual.

On June 5, 2026, the federal government is issuing a one-time top-up payment to more than 12 million eligible Canadians as part of the transition to the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB). Here's what the payment is, how much you could receive, and what changes are coming in July.

What Is the June 5 Payment?

The June 5 deposit is a one-time GST/HST credit top-up — equal to 50% of your annual GST/HST credit entitlement for the 2025–26 benefit year. Think of it as a bonus mid-year payment on top of your regular quarterly schedule.

This payment is part of the federal government's bridge between the old GST/HST credit and the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which officially launches in July 2026. The goal is to get money into Canadians' hands now, before the new program kicks in.

Note: Your bank statement may still label this deposit as the "GST/HST credit" — that's normal. The CRA has confirmed this is the CGEB top-up.

How Much Will You Receive?

The June 5 top-up amount varies based on your household income and family size (using your 2024 tax return). Here are the government's published examples:

Household TypeJune 5 One-Time Top-UpMax 2026 Annual Total*
Single individual (no children)~$267Up to $950
Married/common-law couple (no children)Varies by incomeVaries by income
Family of four (~$40K net income)~$533Up to $1,890

*Maximum 2026 annual total combines the June 5 top-up plus enhanced quarterly CGEB payments starting July 2026. Actual amounts depend on net family income and filing status.

To put the annual increase in perspective: a family of four who received about $1,100 under the old GST/HST credit in 2025 could now receive up to $1,890 in 2026 — an increase of up to $790 over the year.

Do You Qualify?

Eligibility for the June 5 top-up is straightforward: if you received a GST/HST credit payment in January 2026, you qualify. The CRA determines your eligibility automatically — no application needed.

More specifically, you need to have:

  • Filed your 2024 income tax return
  • Been entitled to the GST/HST credit in January 2026
  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • Have a low to modest income (the income threshold depends on family size)

If you're a new resident of Canada who hasn't yet received the GST/HST credit, you may need to apply using Form RC151 through the CRA.

If you're not sure whether you were receiving the GST/HST credit, check your CRA My Account — your benefit and credit details are listed there.

What If You Haven't Filed Your Taxes?

The June 5 payment is based on your 2024 tax return. If you haven't filed yet, you'll miss this top-up — but you can still qualify for the new CGEB quarterly payments starting July 2026, which will be based on your 2025 return.

Bottom line: file your taxes, even if you have no income. The CRA cannot assess your eligibility for any benefit without a filed return.

What Happens After June 5: The New CGEB Starting July 2026

The June 5 payment is a one-time bridge. Starting July 3, 2026, the GST/HST credit officially becomes the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, and the payment amounts get a permanent upgrade:

  • Quarterly payments increase by 25% compared to the old GST/HST credit
  • That 25% boost continues for five years (2026 through 2031)
  • For a single person, quarterly payments of approximately $169.75 per quarter under the maximum benefit
  • Payments continue on the same quarterly schedule: July, October, January, and April

The eligibility rules, calculation structure, and automatic CRA assessment process remain the same as the GST/HST credit — just with higher amounts and a new name.

Can You Spend It on Anything?

Yes — despite the name, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit is a tax-free cash payment with no spending restrictions. You can use it on groceries, rent, utilities, debt payments, or anything else. There is no requirement to spend it on food specifically.

Watch Out for Scams

With any government benefit payment comes a wave of misinformation. The CRA has already flagged disinformation circulating online claiming the government is issuing a separate "$2,000 financial relief payment" by direct deposit. This is false. There is no such payment.

When in doubt, verify any payment claims directly at canada.ca or through your CRA My Account. Never click links in unsolicited texts or emails claiming to be from the CRA.

Quick Summary

  • June 5: One-time top-up (50% of your annual GST/HST credit) hits bank accounts
  • Single person: Up to ~$267 today; up to $950 total in 2026
  • Family of four: Up to ~$533 today; up to $1,890 total in 2026
  • No application needed — CRA assesses automatically from your 2024 return
  • July 3: CGEB replaces GST/HST credit with 25% higher quarterly payments (for 5 years)
  • Tax-free, no spending restrictions

With food prices having risen faster than overall inflation since 2020 — costing the average Canadian household roughly $782 more in that period — the CGEB represents the federal government's most direct tool yet for helping lower-income households absorb those costs. If you qualify, the money should be in your account by end of day tomorrow.
