A Farewell to a Beloved Pontiff: Pope Francis Laid to Rest in Historic Ceremony

In a moment of profound significance, Pope Francis, the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, was laid to rest on April 26, 2025, following a historic funeral attended by an estimated 250,000 mourners. The solemn ceremony took place in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican, drawing world leaders, royalty, and faithful from across the globe to honor the life and legacy of the beloved pontiff.

The funeral, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, was marked by simplicity, reflecting Pope Francis' lifelong commitment to humility and service to the marginalized. The event included traditional rites, such as the meditative chant of a litany of saints and blessings in Greek by Eastern rite Catholic clergy. A poignant moment came as a breeze turned the pages of the Book of the Gospels resting atop the pope's coffin, symbolizing the enduring power of his teachings.

Following the Mass, the pope's coffin was carried in a motorcade through Rome's historic streets, passing landmarks like the Colosseum, before arriving at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. There, Pope Francis was interred in a private ceremony, becoming the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was known for his dedication to the poor, his advocacy for social justice, and his efforts to modernize the Church. His 12-year papacy left an indelible mark on the 1.4-billion-member Catholic Church and the world at large.

The funeral marked the end of an era, but the legacy of Pope Francis' compassion and leadership will continue to inspire generations to come.
