Greece’s Asylum Freeze Sparks Global Outcry Amid Crete Migrant Surge

In a move that has ignited fierce backlash from human rights organizations and the United Nations, Greece has passed legislation temporarily halting asylum applications from migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. The three-month suspension, approved by parliament with 177 votes in favor and 74 against, allows for expedited repatriation without prior identification. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis defended the measure as a “difficult but necessary decision” in response to a sharp rise in irregular arrivals, particularly from Libya to the island of Crete. Over 7,000 migrants have reached Crete and nearby Gavdos this year, straining local resources and prompting concerns from the tourism industry. Rights groups, including the International Rescue Committee, have condemned the ban as illegal and inhumane, warning it violates international and European law. Court Grants Trump Temporary Authority Over National Guard in LA Amid Protests

A U.S. appeals court has ruled in favor of President Donald Trump, allowing him to maintain control over National Guard troops deployed in Los Angeles. The decision temporarily halts a lower court ruling that had ordered the troops to be returned to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s authority.

The deployment of the National Guard and an incoming battalion of 700 U.S. Marines comes in response to ongoing protests against stepped-up immigration enforcement. The protests, which have spread to multiple cities, were sparked by intensified Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

Earlier, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer had declared Trump’s deployment of the Guard unlawful, ordering their return to state control. However, the appeals court’s decision pauses that ruling, leaving Trump in command of the troops for now. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday to further review the matter.

California officials, including Governor Newsom, have strongly opposed the federalization of the National Guard, arguing that the situation does not warrant military intervention. Meanwhile, reports suggest that morale among the deployed troops is low, with concerns that Marines are being used as political pawns.

The legal battle over the deployment continues, with both sides preparing for the upcoming court hearing. As tensions rise, the presence of federal troops in Los Angeles remains a contentious issue in the broader debate over immigration enforcement and states’ rights.
