TSX Slumps as Central Banks Hold Steady

Canada’s Main Index Suffers Sharpest Drop Since May The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index fell 169.92 points, or 0.6%, to close at 27,369.96 on Wednesday, marking its steepest single-day decline in ten weeks. The drop followed a record high the previous day, underscoring investor unease as both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada opted to keep interest rates unchanged. The materials sector led the retreat, sliding 2.1% amid tumbling copper and gold prices. Financials and technology also posted losses, down 0.6% and 0.5% respectively, as eight of the index’s ten major sectors ended in the red. Court Grants Trump Temporary Authority Over National Guard in LA Amid Protests

A U.S. appeals court has ruled in favor of President Donald Trump, allowing him to maintain control over National Guard troops deployed in Los Angeles. The decision temporarily halts a lower court ruling that had ordered the troops to be returned to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s authority.

The deployment of the National Guard and an incoming battalion of 700 U.S. Marines comes in response to ongoing protests against stepped-up immigration enforcement. The protests, which have spread to multiple cities, were sparked by intensified Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

Earlier, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer had declared Trump’s deployment of the Guard unlawful, ordering their return to state control. However, the appeals court’s decision pauses that ruling, leaving Trump in command of the troops for now. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday to further review the matter.

California officials, including Governor Newsom, have strongly opposed the federalization of the National Guard, arguing that the situation does not warrant military intervention. Meanwhile, reports suggest that morale among the deployed troops is low, with concerns that Marines are being used as political pawns.

The legal battle over the deployment continues, with both sides preparing for the upcoming court hearing. As tensions rise, the presence of federal troops in Los Angeles remains a contentious issue in the broader debate over immigration enforcement and states’ rights.
