Greece’s Asylum Freeze Sparks Global Outcry Amid Crete Migrant Surge

In a move that has ignited fierce backlash from human rights organizations and the United Nations, Greece has passed legislation temporarily halting asylum applications from migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. The three-month suspension, approved by parliament with 177 votes in favor and 74 against, allows for expedited repatriation without prior identification. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis defended the measure as a “difficult but necessary decision” in response to a sharp rise in irregular arrivals, particularly from Libya to the island of Crete. Over 7,000 migrants have reached Crete and nearby Gavdos this year, straining local resources and prompting concerns from the tourism industry. Rights groups, including the International Rescue Committee, have condemned the ban as illegal and inhumane, warning it violates international and European law. Running from June 20 to September 2, 2025, the pass grants free admission to all national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas managed by Parks Canada.  

Beyond free entry, the pass also offers discounts on camping fees, making it easier for families and adventurers to immerse themselves in nature. Additionally, young travelers can benefit from discounted museum admissions and reduced fares on VIA Rail, encouraging exploration across the country.  

Culture Minister Steven Guilbeault emphasized that the initiative is designed to help Canadians reconnect with their heritage and natural wonders while fostering national unity. No registration or physical pass is required—just show up and enjoy the experience.  

With summer fast approaching, the Canada Strong Pass is set to make travel more accessible and enjoyable for all. Whether it's hiking in Banff National Park, exploring historic forts, or discovering Indigenous heritage sites, this initiative ensures that everyone can experience the best of Canada without financial barriers.
