Greece’s Asylum Freeze Sparks Global Outcry Amid Crete Migrant Surge

In a move that has ignited fierce backlash from human rights organizations and the United Nations, Greece has passed legislation temporarily halting asylum applications from migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. The three-month suspension, approved by parliament with 177 votes in favor and 74 against, allows for expedited repatriation without prior identification. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis defended the measure as a “difficult but necessary decision” in response to a sharp rise in irregular arrivals, particularly from Libya to the island of Crete. Over 7,000 migrants have reached Crete and nearby Gavdos this year, straining local resources and prompting concerns from the tourism industry. Tensions Rise in Los Angeles as US Marines Deploy Amid Protests

Hundreds of US Marines arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday under orders from President Donald Trump, escalating tensions in the city as protests continued for a fifth consecutive day. The deployment follows a series of immigration raids that have sparked widespread demonstrations, with California Governor Gavin Newsom warning that "democracy is under assault".

The protests, initially peaceful, have seen increasing clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. In response to violence and looting, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass imposed a curfew over parts of downtown. Police reported 197 arrests on Tuesday alone, more than doubling the total number of arrests since the protests began.

Governor Newsom has strongly opposed the federal troop deployment, calling it an "illegal waste of resources" and filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration to block the move. Trump, in turn, defended his decision, stating that the protests represent "a full-blown assault on peace, public order, and national sovereignty".

As tensions mount, demonstrators continue to rally against the immigration policies that triggered the unrest. With thousands of National Guard troops also deployed, the situation in Los Angeles remains volatile, raising concerns about the broader implications of federal intervention in state affairs.
