Canada’s Labour Market Surges in June, Defying Economic Forecasts

Canada’s job market delivered a pleasant surprise in June, as the national unemployment rate dipped to 6.9% , defying economists’ expectations of a rise to 7.1%. According to Statistics Canada, the economy added 83,000 jobs , marking the first significant employment gain since January. The bulk of the new positions were part-time roles , with 47,000 jobs  created in the private sector. Former Executives at London Hospital Face $60M Fraud Allegations

A major scandal has rocked the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) in Ontario, where a forensic audit uncovered an alleged decade-long fraud scheme involving senior executives and contractors. The hospital has filed two civil lawsuits totaling $60 million, accusing eight former staff members and several companies of misappropriating public funds through inflated contracts and falsified documents.

The primary lawsuit targets former Vice President of Facilities Dipesh Patel, along with other staff and contractors, alleging they awarded contracts to companies with personal ties and billed for work that was never completed. The hospital claims this scheme led to the purchase of over **95 properties**, many acquired using funds from the alleged fraud.

A second lawsuit accuses former CEO Jackie Schleifer Taylor, CFO Abhi Mukherjee, and executive Brad Campbell of failing to act when informed of the misconduct in 2022. Instead of launching an investigation or notifying auditors, they allegedly allowed implicated individuals to lead internal reviews that ignored the fraud.

London Police are currently investigating, and none of the allegations have been proven in court. LHSC has since implemented a whistleblower policy and terminated all staff involved in the alleged misconduct.
