TSX Slumps as Central Banks Hold Steady

Canada’s Main Index Suffers Sharpest Drop Since May The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index fell 169.92 points, or 0.6%, to close at 27,369.96 on Wednesday, marking its steepest single-day decline in ten weeks. The drop followed a record high the previous day, underscoring investor unease as both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada opted to keep interest rates unchanged. The materials sector led the retreat, sliding 2.1% amid tumbling copper and gold prices. Financials and technology also posted losses, down 0.6% and 0.5% respectively, as eight of the index’s ten major sectors ended in the red. Market sentiment soured after the Fed’s decision to hold rates steady offered no clear timeline for future cuts, disappointing investors hoping for dovish signals. Meanwhile, the Bank of Canada maintained its benchmark rate at 2.75% for the third consecutive meeting, citing reduced risks of a global trade war. Among individual stocks, Capital Power Corp sa...

Mass Exodus in Tulkarem: Israeli Demolition Orders Displace Hundreds of Palestinian Families

Hundreds of Palestinian families have fled the Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank following Israeli demolition orders targeting over 100 buildings. The sudden evacuation, which took place on July 2, 2025, has left at least 400 families homeless, with local officials estimating the total number of displaced families at around 1,000.

Residents were seen hastily packing their belongings—mattresses, appliances, and personal items—onto vehicles before leaving their homes behind. The Israeli military cited a “high level of terrorism” in the area as justification for the demolitions, calling them a “tactical necessity” to ensure troop mobility.

Although Israel’s Supreme Court issued a temporary freeze on the demolitions after a petition by the human rights group Adalah, none of the displaced residents have returned as of the following day. The demolitions are part of a broader military campaign that has led to the largest wave of forced displacement in the West Bank since Israel’s 1967 occupation.

Local leaders and humanitarian groups have raised urgent concerns about the fate of the displaced, many of whom have no clear place to go. “Where will these families live? Their fate is uncertain and unknown,” said Faisal Salama, a local official in Tulkarem.

This latest development underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis in the West Bank, as military operations continue to reshape the region’s landscape and uproot its communities.
