Moo Deng Turns One: A Tiny Hippo with a Giant Fanbase Makes a Big Splash

Thousands of animal lovers and online fans joined together, both virtually and in person, to celebrate the first birthday of Moo Deng, the beloved baby pygmy hippopotamus who's captured hearts around the globe. Born at Toronto’s Riverdale Wildlife Sanctuary, Moo Deng has blossomed from a shy calf into a charming ambassador for conservation, becoming a social media icon along the way.

The birthday bash featured hippo-themed cupcakes, live music, and an adorable mud-cake specially made for the guest of honor. Attendees sported custom Moo Deng merch, while children giggled at puppet shows recreating his most viral moments — including the famous “splash and squeak” video that launched his stardom.

Park officials praised Moo Deng’s role in raising awareness about the endangered pygmy hippo species, native to West Africa. “He may be small, but his impact is enormous,” said Sanctuary Director Alicia Mendez. “Through Moo Deng, millions have learned how precious and vulnerable these animals truly are.”

Fans flooded social platforms with well-wishes and memes, and the hashtag #MooDengTurnsOne trended across several countries. Not bad for a creature that weighs less than a Labrador but commands the attention of the world.
