Tragedy Strikes Gabriel House: Deadly Fire Claims Lives at Massachusetts Assisted Living Facility

A devastating fire tore through the Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, late Sunday night, leaving nine people dead and dozens injured, including five firefighters.

The blaze erupted around 9:50 p.m., engulfing the front of the building in heavy smoke and flames. Residents—many elderly and non-ambulatory—were seen hanging out of windows, screaming for help as emergency crews rushed to the scene. About 70 people lived in the facility at the time.

Firefighters, including 30 off-duty personnel, battled the inferno and managed to rescue numerous occupants. Many were transported to local hospitals with varying injuries, while one person remains in critical condition. The heroic efforts of police officers also played a crucial role, with some breaking down doors and physically carrying residents to safety.

“This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,” said Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by state and local authorities. A family reunification center has been established at St. Anne’s Hospital to assist loved ones in locating survivors.
