AI Surge Lifts Markets as Investors Shrug Off U.S. Shutdown Fears

U.S. stock futures climbed Thursday morning, buoyed by a wave of optimism surrounding artificial intelligence that overshadowed concerns about the ongoing government shutdown. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.3% and 0.5% respectively, with the S&P 500 closing above 6,700 for the first time ever. Driving the rally was OpenAI’s meteoric rise in valuation to $500 billion following a $6.6 billion employee share sale, making it the world’s most valuable startup and surpassing SpaceX. The company also inked major chip supply deals with Samsung and SK Hynix, sparking a global rally in semiconductor stocks. Tragedy in Edmonton: Disappearance of Indigenous Teen Samuel Bird Now a Homicide Investigation

The disappearance of 14-year-old Samuel Bird, an Indigenous teenager from Edmonton, has taken a heartbreaking turn as police now believe his death was criminal in nature. Samuel was last seen on June 1, 2025, after leaving his home to visit a friend in the Canora neighborhood. Surveillance footage captured him walking through the grounds of Holy Cross School that evening, but he was never seen again.

Despite extensive search efforts by family, friends, and volunteers from across provinces, hope dwindled as weeks passed. In August, police deemed the case suspicious, and by late September, the Edmonton Police Service confirmed they were treating it as a homicide. Investigators believe Samuel’s body was disposed of on land within 150 kilometers of Edmonton and that steps were taken to conceal it.

Samuel’s parents, Alanna and Justin Bird, expressed profound grief during a recent police update. “His laughter, his spirit and his love are what defined him, not the circumstances of his disappearance,” Alanna said tearfully.

Police are urging landowners, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts to remain vigilant and report any signs that could help locate Samuel’s remains. A suspicious fire at a duplex previously searched in connection to the case is also under investigation.

The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life, while calls for justice and accountability grow louder.
