U.S. Officials Say Iran’s New Supreme Leader Gravely Wounded Amid Escalating Conflict

Protesters hold posters of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his son, Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, during a protest marking al-Quds Day (Jerusalem Day), after Friday prayers at Fatih Mosque in Istanbul. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has confirmed that Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei , was seriously wounded and likely disfigured during the opening phase of U.S. and Israeli military strikes. Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth described Iran’s leadership as “desperate and hiding,” asserting that Khamenei has gone underground following injuries sustained in the attacks.  Reports from multiple outlets indicate that Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the conflict began, fueling speculation about the severity of his condition. Netanyahu Vows to Defend Israeli Military Unit Against U.S. Sanctions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to fight against any sanctions imposed on Israeli military units by the United States. The focus of concern is the Netzah Yehuda battalion, which has been accused of human rights violations in the occupied West Bank. Reports suggest that Washington is considering measures against this battalion for alleged rights violations.

Netanyahu’s statement came in response to Axios news site’s report that the U.S. was planning to impose sanctions on the Netzah Yehuda battalion. The Israeli military, however, maintains that the battalion operates according to international law principles. The situation follows U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s determination that Israel had violated the Leahy law, which prohibits providing military assistance to units committing gross human rights violations.

As tensions continue in the Middle East, Netanyahu’s commitment to defending the Israeli military unit underscores the complex geopolitical landscape in the region.
