Gulf War Flare-Up: What the Latest U.S.–Iran Strikes Mean for Your Wallet

The three-month-old war between the U.S.–Israel coalition and Iran escalated again this morning. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what happened — and what it means for your gas tank and grocery bill. What Happened on June 6? U.S. forces struck Iranian coastal radar sites on Saturday, June 6, after shooting down drones launched by Iran toward the Strait of Hormuz, according to the U.S. military. The U.S. military believes the four Iranian drones were targeting regional maritime traffic. U.S. Central Command said it struck Iran's surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, both located on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran did not take that lying down: Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain in retaliation and fired on four tankers attempting to cross the strait without its permission. Escalation in Gaza: Dozens Killed Amid Intensified Bombardment

Israeli forces have intensified their bombardment across the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 Palestinians, according to health officials. The escalation has seen tanks advancing deeper into western and northern Rafah, with fierce gun battles reported between Israeli troops and Hamas fighters.

Among the casualties was local journalist Mohammad Abu Jasser, who, along with his wife and two children, was killed in an Israeli strike on their home in the northern Gaza Strip. This brings the total number of Palestinian media personnel killed since October 7 to 161, as reported by Gaza’s Hamas-run government media office.

The Israeli military has conducted multiple strikes across Gaza, targeting what it claims are militant infrastructures. In central Gaza, an airstrike on a multi-floor building in Al-Nuseirat camp wounded several people, including two local journalists. In Rafah, Israeli forces have taken control of strategic positions, aiming to dismantle the last battalions of Hamas’ armed wing.

Efforts for a ceasefire, led by Qatar and Egypt and supported by the United States, have so far failed due to ongoing disputes between the combatants. The conflict, which began after a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with over 38,919 Palestinians and 326 Israeli soldiers reported killed.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue to exchange fire, with no immediate resolution in sight.
