Wednesday, April 29, 2026 | moneysavings.ca/canadian-money-brief 1. The Bank of Canada Is Watching — And So Should You Markets are closely parsing every signal from the Bank of Canada ahead of its next rate announcement. With inflation holding stubbornly above target in key categories like shelter and groceries, economists are split on whether another cut is on the table or a longer hold is in store. If you're carrying variable-rate debt or sitting on a GIC renewal, now is the time to model both scenarios. What to do: Don't lock into a long-term rate product until after the next announcement. Israeli Strike Kills Lebanese Soldier, Injures 18 Amid Escalation with Hezbollah

An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon has killed a Lebanese soldier and wounded 18 others, including civilians, as cross-border hostilities with Hezbollah escalate. The strike came in response to a barrage of rockets launched by Hezbollah into northern Israel, intensifying fears of a broader regional conflict.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their operation targeted Hezbollah positions near the border, describing the strikes as a defensive measure. However, Lebanese officials condemned the attack, calling it a violation of sovereignty and a dangerous provocation.

In Beirut, the Lebanese government expressed concerns over the escalating violence, warning that continued hostilities could destabilize the region. “We urge the international community to intervene and prevent further aggression,” said a government spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, framing them as retaliation for Israeli actions in Gaza. The group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, warned that further escalation could follow if Israel continues its military campaign.

As tensions rise, international leaders, including those from the United Nations and the United States, are urging restraint and advocating for renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader conflict.
