Why Interest Rates Matter for Canadians

Interest rates are the single most powerful lever in Canada's economy.  When the Bank of Canada adjusts its policy rate, the effects reach every household—from the cost of carrying a mortgage to the return on a savings account. With rates currently at 2.25% and significant uncertainty ahead, understanding how rates work has never been more important for your finances. What Is the Bank of Canada's Policy Rate? The Bank of Canada sets the overnight policy rate—the interest rate at which major banks lend money to each other. Israeli Strike Kills Lebanese Soldier, Injures 18 Amid Escalation with Hezbollah

An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon has killed a Lebanese soldier and wounded 18 others, including civilians, as cross-border hostilities with Hezbollah escalate. The strike came in response to a barrage of rockets launched by Hezbollah into northern Israel, intensifying fears of a broader regional conflict.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that their operation targeted Hezbollah positions near the border, describing the strikes as a defensive measure. However, Lebanese officials condemned the attack, calling it a violation of sovereignty and a dangerous provocation.

In Beirut, the Lebanese government expressed concerns over the escalating violence, warning that continued hostilities could destabilize the region. “We urge the international community to intervene and prevent further aggression,” said a government spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, framing them as retaliation for Israeli actions in Gaza. The group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, warned that further escalation could follow if Israel continues its military campaign.

As tensions rise, international leaders, including those from the United Nations and the United States, are urging restraint and advocating for renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader conflict.
