Wall Street Pauses as Fed Meeting Looms: Futures Hold Steady

U.S. stock futures were little changed on Tuesday as investors awaited the start of the Federal Reserve’s final policy meeting of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq futures all hovered near flat, reflecting a cautious mood across Wall Street. The Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged, but traders are focused on Chair Jerome Powell’s comments and the central bank’s updated economic projections. Markets are looking for clues on when rate cuts might begin in 2024, with inflation cooling but still above the Fed’s long-term target. Recent gains in equities have been fueled by optimism that the Fed’s tightening cycle is over, yet uncertainty remains about how quickly monetary policy will shift toward easing. Until then, investors appear content to hold their positions, waiting for clearer signals from the Fed before making bold moves.

Sudan Tops IRC's Watchlist Again: The World's Largest Humanitarian Crisis

For the second consecutive year, Sudan has topped the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) watchlist of global humanitarian crises. Released on Wednesday, the 2025 Emergency Watchlist highlights Sudan as the largest humanitarian crisis ever recorded. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has led to the world's largest displacement crisis.

The IRC report reveals that Sudan accounts for 10% of all people in humanitarian need globally, despite being home to just 1% of the world's population. Nearly 26 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger, with famine already declared in the Zamzam displacement camp in Darfur. The conflict has displaced 12 million people, with 9 million internally displaced within Sudan.

The IRC's chief executive, David Miliband, described the situation as "crushing" and emphasized the growing gap between humanitarian need and funding. The report calls for urgent action from the international community to address the crisis and prevent a total humanitarian collapse.

The top five countries on the watchlist, following Sudan, are Gaza and the West Bank, Myanmar, Syria, and South Sudan. The IRC's watchlist serves as a call to action, urging the global community to prioritize humanitarian aid and support for those in need.
