5 Things to Know Today: Canada Enters Recession, Oil Slips on Iran Ceasefire Talk

Saturday, May 30, 2026 — Your quick-hit Canadian financial briefing for the day. 1.Canada Officially Meets the Definition of a Technical Recession Statistics Canada confirmed Friday that real GDP contracted 0.1% on an annualized basis in Q1 2026 — following a revised 1.0% drop in Q4 2025 . Canada Post Workers Set to Strike Amid Ongoing Labor Dispute

Canada Post workers have issued a strike notice, with plans to walk off the job starting Friday at midnight. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), representing 55,000 employees, has informed the Crown corporation of the impending work stoppage, which could significantly impact mail and parcel deliveries across the country.

The strike comes as CUPW and Canada Post struggle to reach a new collective agreement. The union has expressed frustration over stalled negotiations, while Canada Post warns that a labor disruption could worsen its already precarious financial situation.

If the strike proceeds, millions of Canadians and businesses relying on postal services may face delays. Canada Post has stated that socio-economic cheques from government organizations will still be delivered, ensuring financial assistance reaches those in need. However, regular mail and parcel deliveries will be halted until the dispute is resolved.

This strike marks another chapter in the ongoing labor tensions between Canada Post and its workers. The last major strike lasted 32 days, forcing government intervention to end the work stoppage. As the deadline approaches, both sides remain at the bargaining table, hoping to reach an agreement before operations grind to a halt.
