Carney Heads to Rome for Historic Papal Inauguration

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to Rome this Friday to attend the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV. The ceremony, a significant tradition in the Catholic Church, will take place on Sunday, May 18, at St. Peter’s Square.

Carney’s visit will not only mark Canada’s presence at the event but also provide an opportunity for diplomatic discussions. The Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed that Carney will meet with international leaders to explore ways to deepen trade, commerce, and cultural ties during his stay from May 16 to 19.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, is the first pontiff from the United States. His election last week has drawn global attention, with his early statements emphasizing peace, dialogue, and missionary evangelization. His vision for the Church includes addressing modern challenges such as artificial intelligence and continuing the reforms initiated by Pope Francis.

Carney’s attendance follows a longstanding tradition of Canadian leaders participating in papal inaugurations. In 2013, former Governor General David Johnston represented Canada at Pope Francis’s inaugural mass.

As world leaders gather in Rome for this historic occasion, Carney’s presence underscores Canada’s commitment to fostering international relationships and engaging in global discussions on faith, diplomacy, and innovation.
