U.S. Hits Iran’s Kharg Island Military Sites Amid Rising Oil‑Sector Tensions

The US bombed military targets on Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf, but spared oil infrastructure for now. Catastrophic Flooding in Nigeria Claims 151 Lives, Displaces Thousands

A devastating flood has submerged the town of Mokwa in north-central Nigeria, leaving at least 151 people dead and displacing more than 3,000 residents. The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall, affected 500 households across three communities, with homes submerged and only rooftops visible above the water.

The flooding struck in the early hours of Friday, catching many residents off guard. Emergency response teams have been deployed, with search-and-rescue operations ongoing. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has activated the national emergency response center to provide immediate relief, including temporary shelter and essential supplies.

Mokwa, a key market town where traders from the south purchase agricultural goods from northern farmers, has suffered extensive damage. Residents mourn the loss of lives and livelihoods, with stored farm produce destroyed by the rising waters.

Nigeria is prone to seasonal flooding, exacerbated by climate change and excessive rainfall. In 2022, the country experienced its worst flooding in over a decade, claiming more than 600 lives and displacing 1.4 million people

Authorities continue to assess the damage and provide aid to affected communities, as the nation grapples with yet another tragic natural disaster.
