Market Jitters Return as Cooler CPI Surprises Wall Street

A softer‑than‑expected U.S. Consumer Price Index reading sent a ripple through financial markets today, creating an unusual dynamic: good news on inflation, but renewed pressure on major stock indexes. A Cooling CPI, but a Nervous Market The latest CPI report showed inflation easing more than economists anticipated. Under normal circumstances, that would be a welcome sign—suggesting the Federal Reserve may have more room to consider rate cuts later in the year. But markets don’t always behave logically in the moment. Today, the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq all slipped as investors reassessed what the data means for corporate earnings, interest‑rate expectations, and the broader economic outlook. Russia Escalates Conflict with Largest Drone Attack Following Peace Talks

Just days after the first direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in over three years, Moscow launched its largest drone assault of the war, killing a woman and injuring at least three others in Ukraine’s capital region.

Ukraine’s air force reported that 273 drones were deployed overnight, primarily targeting Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Donetsk. The attack surpassed the previous record of 267 drones, which occurred on the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The sustained bombardment led to nine hours of air raid warnings, with Ukrainian air defense units managing to intercept 88 drones. However, the scale of the attack left significant destruction, damaging residential buildings and infrastructure.

The timing of the assault has raised concerns about Russia’s commitment to peace efforts. The Istanbul peace talks, which lasted just 100 minutes, resulted in an agreement to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war but failed to secure a ceasefire.

U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, as global leaders react to the latest escalation.

Ukraine has condemned the attack as an attempt to intimidate negotiators, with officials calling for stronger sanctions against Moscow. As the war continues, the world watches closely to see whether diplomatic efforts can prevent further bloodshed.
