Chaos at Gaza Aid Site Leaves 20 Dead Amid Mounting Tensions

 

At least 20 Palestinians were killed on Wednesday during a deadly crush at an aid distribution center operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The U.S.-backed group, which is supported by Israel, claimed the tragedy was triggered by armed agitators allegedly affiliated with Hamas.

According to GHF, 19 victims were trampled and one was fatally stabbed as panic erupted among thousands of desperate civilians seeking food and supplies. Eyewitnesses described scenes of suffocation and overcrowding, with some blaming the chaos on poor crowd control and the use of pepper spray by site guards.

Palestinian health officials reported 21 deaths, while humanitarian groups and local NGOs condemned the GHF’s operational model. Amjad Al-Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGOs Network, accused the foundation of gross mismanagement and failing to uphold humanitarian principles.

The incident adds to a growing death toll near aid sites in Gaza. The UN rights office in Geneva recently documented over 875 fatalities in the vicinity of distribution points, many of which were attributed to gunfire locals say came from Israeli forces.

Hamas has denied involvement in the unrest and reiterated its demand for the dismantling of the GHF in favor of a UN-led aid system. Meanwhile, ceasefire negotiations continue with no breakthrough, as Israel maintains its military presence and infrastructure expansion in the region.
