U.S. Threatens Harsher Economic Pressure on Iran as Mediators Rush to Secure Second Ceasefire Talks

A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. Choking Heat: Smoke and Scorching Temperatures Grip Ontario

Ontario braces for a double threat this week as hazardous heat and wildfire smoke converge across the province.

A wave of intense heat is settling over Ontario, pushing temperatures well into the 30s Celsius, with humidex values making it feel even hotter. Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for several regions, urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable individuals.

Compounding the danger is the return of wildfire smoke drifting in from blazes burning in northern parts of the country. The smoke is expected to blanket southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area, reducing air quality to hazardous levels. Officials warn that the combination of heat and poor air quality could pose serious health risks, especially for children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions.

Air quality advisories are in effect, and residents are encouraged to stay indoors with windows closed, use air purifiers if available, and wear N95 masks if venturing outside is necessary.

With climate extremes becoming more frequent, experts stress the importance of preparedness and community support during these challenging conditions.
