Hope and Tension as Ukraine and Russia Resume Peace Talks in Turkey

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that Ukraine and Russia will hold a new round of peace talks in Turkey on Wednesday, marking the first such meeting in seven weeks. The talks, confirmed by Rustem Umerov, head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, aim to address key humanitarian issues including prisoner exchanges and the return of children abducted by Russia.

Despite the renewed diplomatic effort, the Kremlin has expressed skepticism, noting that both sides remain “diametrically opposed” on how to end the war. Russia continues to demand Ukraine relinquish control over four regions it claims to have annexed, while Ukraine insists on a full ceasefire and restoration of its territorial integrity.

The announcement comes amid escalating violence, with Russia launching a barrage of missiles and drones on Ukrainian cities, killing two and injuring 15 on Monday night. Ukraine has responded with long-range drone strikes, intensifying the conflict.

International pressure is mounting, with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening new sanctions if no progress is made within 50 days. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, visiting Kyiv, emphasized the need for diplomacy that respects both sides’ interests, while supporting tougher sanctions if Russia refuses to compromise.

As the world watches, the upcoming talks in Turkey offer a glimmer of hope—but also underscore the deep divisions that continue to fuel the war.
