Firefighters Battle Blazes in Turkey, Greece, and Albania Amid Relentless Heat

Southern Europe is grappling with a wave of destructive wildfires as firefighters in Turkey, Greece, and Albania struggle to contain blazes ignited by days of scorching temperatures and dry conditions.

In Turkey, flames tore through forested areas near the coastal provinces, prompting evacuations and mobilizing aerial firefighting units. Greece faced similar challenges, with fires erupting near Athens and on the island of Rhodes, where strong winds and parched vegetation accelerated the spread. Albanian emergency crews also battled fires in mountainous regions, where access and containment efforts proved difficult.

The intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C (104°F), has created tinderbox conditions across the region. Authorities have issued warnings urging residents to stay indoors and avoid activities that could spark new fires.

Environmental experts warn that climate change is intensifying the frequency and severity of such heatwaves, making wildfire seasons longer and more dangerous. As emergency teams work around the clock, international support and cooperation are being called upon to help mitigate the crisis and prevent further devastation.
