Markets Slip as Investors Bet on Extended U.S.–Iran Ceasefire

Stocks Edge Lower as Investors Hope U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Will Hold Stocks drifted lower today as markets balanced cautious optimism over a potential extension of the U.S.–Iran ceasefire with persistent geopolitical and inflation concerns. Recent trading sessions have shown that even modest signs of diplomatic progress can meaningfully shift investor sentiment. Asian and U.S. markets rallied earlier this week on hopes that Washington and Tehran would continue negotiations, helping unwind some of the war-driven risk premiums that had pushed oil and volatility higher. Macron Files Defamation Suit Against U.S. Influencer Over False Claims About First Lady

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron have filed a defamation lawsuit in the United States against conservative influencer and podcaster Candace Owens. The suit, lodged in Delaware Superior Court, accuses Owens of orchestrating a “campaign of global humiliation” through false claims that Brigitte Macron was born male and assumed a new identity.

The Macrons allege that Owens knowingly spread these fabrications—including that Brigitte was born as Jean-Michel Trogneux, her brother’s name—and used them to promote her podcast and grow her audience. The 22-count complaint seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

This legal action marks a rare instance of a sitting world leader pursuing defamation charges abroad. To succeed, the Macrons must prove “actual malice”—that Owens either knew her statements were false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

Owens has not publicly responded to the lawsuit, and the Macrons have declined further comment. The case follows a previous defamation suit Brigitte Macron filed in France in 2021 over similar transgender rumors.
