Putin Declares End of Liberal Globalization Era at BRICS Summit

At the 17th BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that the era of liberal globalization is becoming obsolete, signaling a shift in global economic dynamics. Speaking via videoconference, Putin emphasized that the center of business activity is moving toward emerging markets, particularly those within the BRICS bloc—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, now joined by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia.

Putin argued that the traditional unipolar model of international relations is giving way to a more equitable, multipolar world. He highlighted the growing economic influence of BRICS, noting that the bloc now accounts for 40% of the global economy and boasts a combined GDP of $77 trillion at purchasing power parity—surpassing that of the G7, according to IMF data.

Calling for deeper cooperation among BRICS nations, Putin urged increased use of national currencies in trade and collaboration in sectors such as technology, logistics, and finance. His remarks reflect Russia’s broader strategy to pivot away from Western-dominated institutions and foster stronger ties with the Global South.

The summit also underscored geopolitical tensions, as Putin addressed the gathering remotely due to an ICC arrest warrant related to the war in Ukraine—a move Moscow has dismissed as politically motivated.
