U.S. Threatens Harsher Economic Pressure on Iran as Mediators Rush to Secure Second Ceasefire Talks

A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. Sky Siege: Ukrainian Drones Disrupt Moscow’s Air Travel

A wave of Ukrainian drone attacks over the weekend plunged Moscow’s major airports into disarray, triggering widespread flight cancellations, delays, and passenger chaos. According to Russia’s defense ministry, over 230 drones were intercepted, with 30 targeting the capital alone.

The four busiest airports—Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovskiy—were forced to suspend operations multiple times, resulting in more than 140 flights cancelled and 130 redirected. Images from Sheremetyevo showed travelers sleeping on terminal floors and queuing for hours as Russia’s civil aviation authority imposed temporary flight restrictions.

The disruption extended beyond Moscow, stranding thousands in Eastern Russia and prompting emergency train services from St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, Russia retaliated with its own aerial barrage, launching 450 drones and missiles at Ukraine, killing at least two and injuring 16 in Kyiv.

As drone warfare escalates, international travel to and from Russia remains volatile. Both the UK and US governments continue to advise against travel to Russia, citing security risks and limited consular support.

This latest exchange underscores the growing role of unmanned aerial systems in modern conflict—and their power to paralyze civilian infrastructure far from the front lines.
