Sky Siege: Ukrainian Drones Disrupt Moscow’s Air Travel

A wave of Ukrainian drone attacks over the weekend plunged Moscow’s major airports into disarray, triggering widespread flight cancellations, delays, and passenger chaos. According to Russia’s defense ministry, over 230 drones were intercepted, with 30 targeting the capital alone.

The four busiest airports—Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovskiy—were forced to suspend operations multiple times, resulting in more than 140 flights cancelled and 130 redirected. Images from Sheremetyevo showed travelers sleeping on terminal floors and queuing for hours as Russia’s civil aviation authority imposed temporary flight restrictions.

The disruption extended beyond Moscow, stranding thousands in Eastern Russia and prompting emergency train services from St. Petersburg. Meanwhile, Russia retaliated with its own aerial barrage, launching 450 drones and missiles at Ukraine, killing at least two and injuring 16 in Kyiv.

As drone warfare escalates, international travel to and from Russia remains volatile. Both the UK and US governments continue to advise against travel to Russia, citing security risks and limited consular support.

This latest exchange underscores the growing role of unmanned aerial systems in modern conflict—and their power to paralyze civilian infrastructure far from the front lines.
