Starvation Claims 15 More Lives in Gaza Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza has reached a devastating new low, with 15 Palestinians, including several children, dying of starvation within a 24-hour period, according to local health officials.

Among the victims was a six-week-old infant, Yousef al-Safadi, who died in a hospital in northern Gaza. Thirteen-year-old Abdulhamid al-Ghalban also succumbed to hunger in Khan Younis, while three other children were among the dead. These deaths bring the total number of starvation-related fatalities to at least 101 since October 2023, with 80 of them being children.

The crisis stems from a near-total blockade of aid into Gaza, where Israel controls all entry points. Aid groups and UN officials report that hospitals are overwhelmed and unable to treat hunger-related illnesses due to severe shortages of food and medicine. Baby formula is critically scarce, and over 600,000 people are suffering from malnutrition, including 60,000 pregnant women.

International condemnation has grown, but concrete action remains elusive. The UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini stated, “No one is spared: caretakers in Gaza are also in need of care. Doctors, nurses, journalists and humanitarians are hungry”.

Daily food gathering has become perilous, with over 1,000 people reportedly killed while trying to access aid since May. The U.S. estimates that 600 trucks of aid are needed daily, yet only 146 trucks have been entering Gaza on average.

As the death toll rises and desperation deepens, humanitarian organizations continue to call for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted access to life-saving aid. Without urgent intervention, Gaza’s hunger crisis threatens to spiral into an even greater tragedy.
