Tragedy at Deir al-Balah: Children Killed in Gaza Clinic Strike Amid Stalled Ceasefire Talks

Displaced Palestinian families endure harsh conditions in Gaza City

An Israeli airstrike near a medical clinic in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, on Thursday claimed the lives of at least 16 civilians, including 10 children, according to local health authorities. The victims had reportedly gathered outside the clinic to receive nutritional supplements and medical care when the missile struck.

Footage from the scene showed a harrowing aftermath: children lying motionless on a donkey cart, bloodied bodies scattered amid dust and debris, and anguished cries from grieving families. One mother, Samah al-Nouri, mourned her daughter, saying, “She was only getting treatment in a medical facility. Why did they kill them?”.

The Israeli military stated the strike targeted a Hamas militant involved in the October 7, 2023 attacks, and acknowledged reports of civilian casualties. The incident is currently under review.

The attack occurred as ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas entered their fifth day in Qatar. Despite international pressure and mediation efforts, no immediate breakthrough is expected. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed cautious optimism, saying, “Perhaps we’re closer than we’ve been in quite a while”.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s hospitals continue to struggle under dire conditions. Fuel shortages have forced doctors to place multiple premature babies in single incubators, raising alarm over the deteriorating humanitarian situation.

This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict, as civilians—especially children—remain caught in the crossfire.
