U.S. Officials Say Iran’s New Supreme Leader Gravely Wounded Amid Escalating Conflict

Protesters hold posters of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his son, Iran's new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, during a protest marking al-Quds Day (Jerusalem Day), after Friday prayers at Fatih Mosque in Istanbul. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has confirmed that Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei , was seriously wounded and likely disfigured during the opening phase of U.S. and Israeli military strikes. Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth described Iran’s leadership as “desperate and hiding,” asserting that Khamenei has gone underground following injuries sustained in the attacks.  Reports from multiple outlets indicate that Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the conflict began, fueling speculation about the severity of his condition. Some accounts suggest he may have suffered catastrophic injuries, including the loss of a limb and a possible coma, after an airstrike that also killed members of his family.  U.S....

Trump and Starmer Meet in Scotland for High-Stakes Talks on Trade and Gaza

U.S. President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened Monday at Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland for pivotal discussions on international trade and the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The meeting follows the recent signing of a UK-U.S. trade agreement that lowers tariffs on key sectors like automotive and aerospace. However, Starmer is pressing for further concessions—particularly on steel and aluminum tariffs, which remain at 50%. Trump, fresh off a major trade deal with the EU, indicated no changes to those duties but praised the UK deal as “great for both sides”.

Beyond trade, Gaza dominated the agenda. Starmer urged Trump to help revive stalled ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, emphasizing the “unspeakable suffering” of Palestinians amid widespread starvation and displacement. The UK has joined efforts to airdrop aid and evacuate children, while Trump pledged increased U.S. aid but called for broader international involvement.

Starmer faces mounting pressure at home to recognize Palestinian statehood, a move already announced by France for September. While Starmer insists recognition must come through a negotiated peace, over 220 British MPs—including many from his own Labour Party—are demanding swifter action.

The leaders also touched on the war in Ukraine and broader geopolitical stability. After their meeting, they are expected to travel to Aberdeen for a private engagement, continuing Trump’s blend of diplomacy and leisure on his five-day visit to Scotland.
