Trump Vows Action for Afghan Refugees Detained in UAE

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to assist Afghan refugees who have been detained in the United Arab Emirates for years following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I will try to save them, starting right now,” referencing reports that some refugees may be handed over to the Taliban.

The UAE initially agreed to temporarily house thousands of Afghans evacuated from Kabul during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal. While many have since been resettled, including approximately 1,000 in Canada, dozens remain in limbo at facilities like Emirates Humanitarian City in Abu Dhabi.

Trump’s statement comes amid reports that the UAE has already repatriated some Afghan families, allegedly under pressure or duress. Advocacy groups such as #AfghanEvac have urged Trump to follow through with concrete actions, including expediting processing and securing third-country resettlement options.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in refugee resettlement and international coordination, as well as the humanitarian concerns surrounding forced returns to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
