A woman walks past a digital screen displaying news of US-Iran peace talks along a road in Islamabad on April 10, 2026 The United States has warned it will step up economic pressure on Iran while mediators race to arrange a second round of ceasefire talks before the fragile truce expires on April 22, 2026 — a standoff that risks higher oil prices, tighter global markets, and direct costs for Canadian households and investors.   Background and diplomatic timeline A two‑week ceasefire that paused nearly seven weeks of fighting was brokered to create a narrow diplomatic window for talks between Washington and Tehran. WHO Condemns Israeli Military Assault on Staff Residence in Gaza

The World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly condemned the Israeli military for attacking its staff residence and main warehouse in Deir al-Balah, Gaza. According to WHO, the facility was struck three times on Monday, causing fires and extensive damage. Israeli forces reportedly entered the premises, forcing women and children to evacuate on foot amid active conflict, while male staff and family members were allegedly handcuffed, stripped, and interrogated at gunpoint.

Four individuals—two WHO staff and two family members—were detained, with one staff member still in custody as of Tuesday. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus demanded the immediate release of the detained personnel and reiterated the need for protection of humanitarian workers.

The organization’s main warehouse, located within an Israeli-declared evacuation zone, was also damaged in a separate strike, further compromising relief efforts. Despite the attacks, WHO has vowed to continue and expand its operations in Gaza, which remains a critical hub for humanitarian aid amid the ongoing conflict.

The Israeli military has not yet responded to the allegations. The incident has intensified international calls for a ceasefire, with over 25 countries condemning the humanitarian crisis and urging Israel to comply with international law.
