German Lawmaker Urges Tougher Stance on Israel After Gaza Visit

Siemtje Moeller, deputy leader of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), has called for potential sanctions on Israel following a recent trip to the region with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. Her remarks reflect growing frustration within Berlin over Israel’s handling of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and its resistance to international pressure.

Moeller proposed measures such as suspending weapons exports and reconsidering a European Union-wide political agreement with Israel. She emphasized that the Israeli government is unlikely to change course without external pressure, stating, “If such concrete improvements fail to materialize in the near future, there must be consequences.”

She also advocated for the recognition of a Palestinian state, arguing that it should no longer be considered “taboo.” Moeller criticized Israeli claims that aid to Gaza is unrestricted, calling them unconvincing amid reports of widespread starvation and malnutrition.

Her comments come as other Western nations—including France, Britain, and Canada—signal readiness to recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN General Assembly. Germany’s response, however, remains cautious, shaped by historical sensitivities and strong pro-Israel sentiment in its media and political circles.

Moeller demanded the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas and insisted the group must be disarmed and excluded from Gaza’s political future. While her stance marks a shift in rhetoric, it remains to be seen whether it will translate into concrete policy changes within Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s coalition government.
