Canada Condemns Israel Over Gaza Famine, Calls for Immediate Ceasefire
The Canadian government has sharply criticized Israel following a UN-backed assessment confirming that famine is occurring in parts of the Gaza Strip and spreading rapidly. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported extreme food deprivation, acute malnutrition, and starvation-related deaths, describing the crisis as entirely man-made and reversible if aid is allowed to flow freely.
Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai said Ottawa is “deeply alarmed” by the deteriorating humanitarian situation, accusing Israel — as the occupying power — of failing to meet its obligations under international law by restricting the delivery of food and medical supplies. He urged an immediate ceasefire to enable large-scale humanitarian relief.
Israel has rejected the famine finding, citing increased aid truck entries under global pressure, though aid agencies maintain the current levels remain far below the 500–600 trucks per day needed. The dispute comes amid ongoing military operations, including recent airstrikes that killed civilians and journalists in Gaza City, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “tragic mishap”.
The crisis underscores deep divisions over responsibility for Gaza’s humanitarian collapse, with Canada pressing for urgent action to prevent further loss of life.
