Economists expect Canada added around 10,000 jobs in June, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 6.6%. That would follow a much stronger May, when the economy added 88,000 jobs and the unemployment rate actually fell by 0.3 percentage points. Carney Unveils Historic Military Pay Boost to Strengthen Canadian Forces



In a landmark move to revitalize Canada’s military recruitment and retention, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a sweeping pay increase for members of the Canadian Armed Forces during a visit to CFB Trenton on Friday.

The most notable change is a 20% raise in starting pay for Regular Force privates, boosting their annual salary from $43,368 to $52,044. Reservists will see a 13% increase, while higher-ranking officers will receive more modest raises—13% for lieutenant-colonels and below, and 8% for colonels and above.

The pay hikes are retroactive to April 1, 2025, and form part of a broader $9.3 billion defence investment aimed at meeting NATO’s 2% GDP spending target. Additional compensation measures include lump-sum payments based on years of service, a new Military Service Pay benefit, and targeted recruitment allowances for critical roles.

Carney emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to “rebuilding, rearming, and reinvesting” in the Armed Forces, ensuring that those who serve are compensated in line with the demands and sacrifices of military life.
