Defiance in the Skies: Air Canada Flight Attendants Press On with Strike Despite Ruling

Air Canada’s labour dispute escalated Monday as thousands of flight attendants vowed to remain on strike, openly defying a Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) ruling that declared the work stoppage illegal.

The CIRB ordered the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents roughly 10,000 flight attendants, to end the strike and direct members back to work by noon Eastern Time. The decision followed a weekend of travel chaos, with an estimated 500,000 passengers affected since the walkout began on August 16.

CUPE leadership, however, rejected the directive, insisting that a fair resolution must be reached at the bargaining table before service resumes. National President Mark Hancock said members were prepared to face fines or even jail time rather than comply.

The federal government had invoked a rarely used provision of the Canada Labour Code to push both sides into binding arbitration, a move that has drawn criticism from major unions nationwide. Air Canada maintains it is ready to restart operations as soon as the strike ends, but with both sides entrenched, travellers remain caught in the middle.

Airports across the country continue to see picket lines, as the dispute over pay and working conditions shows no sign of immediate resolution.
