Markets Slip as Investors Bet on Extended U.S.–Iran Ceasefire

Stocks Edge Lower as Investors Hope U.S.–Iran Ceasefire Will Hold Stocks drifted lower today as markets balanced cautious optimism over a potential extension of the U.S.–Iran ceasefire with persistent geopolitical and inflation concerns. Recent trading sessions have shown that even modest signs of diplomatic progress can meaningfully shift investor sentiment. Asian and U.S. markets rallied earlier this week on hopes that Washington and Tehran would continue negotiations, helping unwind some of the war-driven risk premiums that had pushed oil and volatility higher. Despite the pullback, investors remain hopeful that the ceasefire—currently set to expire soon—will be extended, giving negotiators more time to work toward a longer-term agreement. Reports indicate both sides are considering adding another two weeks to the pause, a move that has already helped push Brent crude below the recent peak of nearly US$120 per barrel. FBI Raids Home of Ex-Trump Adviser John Bolton in Classified Records Probe

The search of John Bolton’s home comes as the Trump administration has taken steps to examine the activities of other perceived adversaries of the president.

Federal agents on Friday carried out a court-authorized search of the Maryland home and Washington office of John Bolton, the former national security adviser under Donald Trump, as part of a Justice Department investigation into the handling of classified material.

The early-morning operation, led by the FBI, reportedly began around 7 a.m. and was ordered by FBI Director Kash Patel, who later posted on social media: “NO ONE is above the law… @FBI agents on mission”. Bolton, a longtime Republican official and vocal critic of Trump since leaving the White House in 2019, was neither detained nor charged.

The precise focus of the investigation remains unclear, though it is believed to involve potential mishandling or retention of national security information. The search adds Bolton to a growing list of Trump’s political adversaries who have faced federal scrutiny since the president returned to office in January.

Bolton, who also served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under George W. Bush, clashed frequently with Trump over foreign policy and later published a memoir critical of his former boss. The Justice Department previously attempted to block the book’s release, claiming it contained classified information, but dropped the case in 2021 under the Biden administration.

The FBI and Justice Department have declined to comment further on the search.
